What is hydrogen water?
In simple terms, hydrogen water (also called hydrogen-rich water) is ordinary drinking water infused with molecular hydrogen H₂ — much the way sparkling water is infused with carbon dioxide CO₂.

Every claim about benefits should rest on clinical research. The antioxidant activity of molecular hydrogen was first documented in 2007 by a team of Japanese scientists led by Professor Shigeo Ohta. The results were published in Nature Medicine. After that paper, researchers worldwide began studying the therapeutic properties of molecular hydrogen in earnest.
To date, researchers have published more than 2,000 studies on molecular hydrogen therapy — in scientific journals of Japan, Korea, China, the USA, Germany, Mexico, Serbia, Slovakia and Ukraine (Prof. O. S. Pokotylo).

How the alkaline pitcher works
Inside every Living Aqua filter there is a proprietary magnesium–ceramic mineral blend — a formulation developed by the Ukrainian academician Professor Pokotylo. The blend activates as water passes through the filter, starting the natural process that forms “living water”.
As water passes through the filter, it meets a special mineral alloy:
- The water takes on molecular hydrogen (H₂), an antioxidant that is studied for its ability to neutralize free radicals.
- The oxidation–reduction potential (ORP) drops, turning the water into antioxidant-active “living water”.

How hydrogen water is studied in the blood?
In this footage you can see how hydrogen water is studied for its effect on blood rheology, the condition of the cells and overall hemodynamics.
Using a darkfield microscope, we observe how hydrogen water relates to microcirculation at the microscopic level. Working with capillary blood, we look at changes in the morphology and aggregation of red blood cells, and at blood viscosity, cell deformability and oxygenation.
Because of its properties, hydrogen water may be absorbed more readily than ordinary water, which is studied as a way of restoring fluid at both the cellular and the vascular level. The research looks at whether it may support cellular and vascular function, not only fluid intake.

What is hydrogen water? Doesn’t water already contain hydrogen?
Of course there is hydrogen in water. A molecule of ordinary water is two hydrogen atoms bound tightly to one oxygen atom. Hydrogen water contains free molecular hydrogen H₂ that is not bound — which is not the same thing as H₂O.
Are there natural sources of hydrogen water?
Hydrogen water can form in nature, but its concentration in natural sources is very low. Known natural sources are the hot springs of Japan, Korea, Mexico and other parts of the world, where water reacts with gases from the deep layers of the Earth.
What is the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) of water?
In medicine, one of the most important parameters of a fluid is its “charge” — the oxidation-reduction potential. All human cells and internal fluids (blood, lymph) carry a negative ORP: from −50 to −150 mV. With water of negative ORP the body spends no energy converting it, so it is absorbed readily.
How can molecular hydrogen be produced?
The most common ways: 1) a chemical reaction of water with metals (usually magnesium) or metal hydrides; 2) PEM electrolysis of water (devices start at about $100). Living Aqua uses the first way — no electricity.
How much hydrogen is in the water after the Living Aqua filter?
The amount depends on the quality, mineral content and temperature of the source water. On average, after 1–2 minutes the concentration is 0.3–0.8 ppm — a level studied for everyday antioxidant support. In favorable conditions it reaches 1.0 ppm and above.
Is hydrogen water studied for healthy aging and longevity?
Yes. Studies report that hydrogen-rich water increases the expression of fibroblast growth factor 21, whose activation through AMPK is studied for its role in healthy aging and in extending the lifespan of mammals.
What are free radicals, or oxidants?
They are highly active, aggressive molecules with an unpaired electron. Seeking to fill it, they react with cell membranes, fats, proteins and even DNA. Damage to cells by oxidants is called oxidative stress.
How long does a Living Aqua filter last?
The officially recommended service life of one filter is 6–8 weeks, or up to 300–350 L (79–92 gal) of water. After that the filter loses effectiveness and needs replacing; it is not meant to be reused or taken apart.
How long does the water keep its properties once poured into another container?
In a closed container hydrogen water keeps its properties for up to 5–6 hours; in an open glass, about 1 hour. So drink it fresh.
